Delaware Symphony Orchestra Music Director Search Process
In Spring 2023, the Delaware Symphony Orchestra (DSO) began its search for the sixth Music Director in the organization’s 118-year history.
The process is led by a Search Committee composed of Musicians of the Orchestra, Members of the Board of Directors of the Delaware Symphony Association, Community Leaders, and DSO staff. Currently serving members are:

- Tracey Quillen Carney, First Lady, State of Delaware
- George Christensen, Board of Directors; Artistic Steering Committee member
- Frank Clowes, President, Board of Directors; Artistic Steering Committee member
- Dr. James Ellison, Chair, Artistic Steering Committee; Board of Directors
- David Fleming, Past President, Board of Directors; Artistic Steering Committee member
- Tyler Holloway, Board of Directors
- Brian Kuszyk, Principal Trumpet
- Dan McDougall, Principal Bass; Artistic Steering Committee member
- Kimberly Reighley, Principal Flute; Artistic Steering Committee member
- Karen Schubert, Principal Horn
- David Southorn, Concertmaster; Artistic Steering Committee member
- J.C. Barker, Chief Executive Officer
Following the initial offering, the Search Committee received 147 applicants from around the world. The overwhelming response is a testament to the reputation of our organization and the artistic excellence of our musicians.
Process Timeline To Date
- June 2023 — Music Director Search Committee formed
- June-July 2023 — Job description created
- July 28, 2023 — Position announced through publication in national and international industry outlets as well as the DSO website
- September 29, 2023 — Deadline for application; 147 applications received
- October-November 2023 — Application submissions reviewed by the Search Committee
- November 2023 — Selection of 17 semi-finalist candidates
- November-December 2023 — Interviews conducted with all semi-finalist candidates
- December 2023 — Selection of 9 second-round interviews for semi-finalist candidates
- January 2024 — Final interviews with remaining candidates and selection of finalists
- February 2024 — Announcement of finalists selected to appear with the DSO in the 2024-2025 season
